Passionate Pipeline Campaigners Book: A “Roadmap to Better Alternatives"
Hi, my name is Ben West. I have been intimately involved in organizing campaigns against oil pipelines and other fossil fuel projects on the west coast of Canada for many long years. We are at a critical place; at a critical time. Proposed tar sands pipelines in BC have huge implications not only for our coast but perhaps more importantly for our global climate. I am asking for your help to write this book in order to share what I have learned. This project is the culmination of over a decade of my work, dreams and experiences trying to answer the question of how can we stop these pipelines and other projects like them that cause global warming and get serious about making better alternatives a reality.
My working title is "Every Time the Wind Blows…". The idea is to get folks asking the question isn’t it wasteful not to capture the energy and wealth that is blowing away in the wind every minute and shining down on us every day?
Single Biggest Threat Facing Humanity Today
Climate change is not only an environmental issue, it is also, fundamentally, a human rights issue. We have a moral responsibility to act. We need to empower people to get involved. I will explore framing, strategy, tactics and action using real world examples and a personal perspective. I will outline a game plan for tackling the power and influence of big oil by focusing on specific better alternative projects.
By supporting the creation of this book you will also be helping me to work with First Nations communities, farmers, labour unions, business leaders and many others as we attempt to make better alternative projects a reality along the proposed pipeline and tanker routes in BC. I will document case studies and share an honest open dialogue about the challenges, opportunities and lessons we are learning.

“Ben has been a critical part of climate and energy campaigns in Canada. He is strategic, creative and a fantastic communicator with a focus on real solutions. A force to be reckoned with.”

Ben West is one of the kindest individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing but, for thousands of us, he is a powerful voice that does more than merely coin a phrase that we ourselves might use, or suggest an action, a tactic or an oppourtunity for us to better our world. He speaks from his bones and taps into an almost magical ability to share stories. Ben continues the tradition of our activist forbearers who have fought the backhanded focus on economy at the expense the world that we love and cherish. He is a hope beacon.

Rarely do we have the opportunity to peer into the mind of a progressive leader as he or she reflects on what they believe is the most important issue at hand; it is rarer still to have that access when the progressive leader is smack dab in middle of coordinating a major campaign. With Ben West’s upcoming book, Every Time the Wind Blows, we have the opportunity to do both.
West has been a progressive leader at the local, national, and international level for more than a decade now. He has a unique ability to bridge the theoretical with the practical: in fact, in West’s holistic approach to social analysis and social action there is no wall between the two. They are instead part of a continuum which, along with a theory of social change that merges a future vision and here-and-now pragmatism, West would consider to be essential elements in the toolkit of any engaged citizen. As a campaigner, West has employed all of these tools, along with a sharp mind, a quick wit, a huge dose of humility, and first class communication skills. The resulting campaigns have changed hearts and minds. Every Time The Wind Blows promises to do no less.
