Let's bring world attention to Stephen Harper's cuts to science funding in a fun and media-friendly way.
We Canadians have proudly “spocked” our $5 bills for almost 15 years. The recent death of actor, Leonard Nimoy, caused a resurgence in this activity. When writer and science advocate, Arthur Gillard, saw this, he said:
“The Spockings will continue until
Canadian government support for science improves!”
As you may know, under Stephen Harper, the Canadian government has muzzled the country's scientists, especially in regard to climate change research.
"We have to make Gillard's words happen,"
So we set up this campaign.
All money given will go back into circulation as $5 bills... SPOCKED!
We’ll give half the SPOCKED bills to organizations like the David Suzuki Foundation and Evidence for Democracy: Canadian groups that further public understanding of climate science. The other half will go to dana.io to improve it for the artists, activists and authors who use it to crowdfund their projects.
We have awesome rewards including:
For $25 we’ll make a special edition “Live Long and Prosper” bill and get it into circulation.
For $50, you can tell us what to write on a SPOCKED bill...
...or if you live in or can travel to Vancouver, Canada, for $50 you can attend our amazing Great Spocking Party!!
There will be a Thank You Wall with Hundreds of SPOCKED Bills Displayed - Chicken Militia - Music - Costumes and Fun!!!
- Tell the world about Harper's disgraceful cuts to scientific research funding!
- Support Canadian science education organizations!
- Support dana.io, crowdfunding for artists, activists and authors!
- Honour Leonard Nimoy.
- JOIN THE GREAT SPOCKING!
Q. Isn't this considered defacement of currency and therefore illegal under Canadian law?
A. Not at all!
Q. Is it true that William Shatner (Captain Kirk) is enthusiastically supportive of this?
A. He loves it.
Q. Why should I send you guys money? Can't I just Spockify my own $5 bills?
A. Why yes you can! All you need is an indelible felt pen and at least one $5CAD bill. If you do choose to spockify your own $5 bills we encourage you to add the hashtag "#spock4science" to help others who happen to receive the note to understand your motivations.
Q. What is the inspiration for this and why tie it to the Harper government's policies?
A. The orginal inspiration for this campaign comes from a Google+ post by science advocate and writter Arthur Gillard. Arthur has been following the Stephen Harper governments muzzling of federal scientists and closing of environmental and climate science departments with considerable alarm. As the science officer on the Starship Enterprise, Mr. Spock would have found Stephen Harper's funding cuts and muzzling of Canadian scientists highly illogical!
