What if you could help empower a woman -- and give her children an educational opportunity -- merely by changing a simple daily chore?
The Hippo Water Roller is an astoundingly simple technology that will change the lives of millions of women and children in rural communities. Let's start a movement.
Join us in this social revolution by bringing this life-changing tool to those who need it!
For many, clean water comes with the twist of a tap. But in rural Africa, access to water requires hard work: hours of walking, waiting in line and heavy lifting. On average, a woman spends four to six hours a day collecting and transporting water to supply her family’s daily needs. The time spent on this basic necessity keeps many children out of school and prevents women from engaging in more empowering activities and income-generating work.
The Hippo Roller - A Smarter Way to Move Water
The hippo water roller has an innovative design that allows the transport of water more easily and efficiently by placing the water inside its “wheel.” A full hippo roller holds 200 lbs (90 kg) of water – five times the amount possible using traditional methods. But because the weight is borne on the ground, it has an effective weight of just 22 pounds (10 kg) allowing children to easily manage a full roller over most types of terrain.
The hippo roller is a major improvement on the toxic, re-purposed gasoline and paint containers that are typically used to collect water in rural communities. Traditional methods of transporting water include carrying heavy five gallon buckets of water on the head. These heavy loads place an enormous strain on the skeletal frame, causing long-term damage and premature ageing.
The practical and durable design of the hippo roller allows more water to be transported more efficiently than traditional methods. A single hippo carries enough water to meet the basic needs of five people per day. It also gives them access to better hygiene and living conditions. In addition, hippo rollers make it possible for families and schools to collect enough water and grow their own vegetables using the drip irrigation cap.
A Small Design Can Change the World
Quite simply, the hippo roller is just a smarter way of transporting water. Developed in South Africa in 1992, over 42,000 hippo rollers have been delivered to women and families in need. For a closer look at how it works -- and some appreciative feedback from the users -- watch this video.
The hippo roller, with it’s large drum capacity, frees women and children from the daily chore of hauling water for their households. Fewer trips to collect water means women and children can spend their time on productive educational and economic opportunities. What a beautiful gift to give to a woman. What a blessing to their community.
"A personal appeal is made to you to actively support this project which will positively change the lives of millions of our fellow Africans.” - former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The "Help Us Roll 1000 Hippos" Campaign
A group of us were sitting around and discussing how we could empower a whole African community by funding hippo rollers through a crowdfunding venture. Here we are. Since then we've had lots of discussions on the implications of this simple technology and how it will change the lives of women and children. We wanted to play our part in that evolution.
There's no question that the hippo roller is a wonderful tool. But it is just a tool. What we were all drawn to are the smiling faces of the women who are using them. That’s where the power lies. Liberated from this backbreaking chore, what would she do?
Here’s what we concluded: If a hippo roller can save a woman 20+ hours of work per week, imagine what a group of women could collectively do with that time. Or a nation of women.
But we’re starting with 1000.
Guilt-free Giving - a New Approach to Helping
The Help Us Roll 1000 Hippos is being launched on this crowd-funding platform. Our goal is to raise the funds to put a hippo roller into the hands of 1000 women in rural Africa. While it barely scratches the surface of the need, we see our mission as starting the momentum to create a paradigm shift on how a chore is done. Best of all, it requires no training, no skill and no tools. The gift of a hippo roller delivers an immediate benefit to those who need it the most... women and children.
To connect our donors to the recipient family, your personal profile and contact information is included in the Welcome Package which is inserted into the hippo roller you sponsor. Africa is increasingly 'connected' and part of your gving is connecting you with the receiving family through social media and technology. This has the potential of creating a deeper emotional bond between the individuals. This project provides the opportunity to participate in building the global community.
Our Goal? To Get 1000 Hippos Rolling....
It costs $150 to provide one family with a hippo roller that will last them for about 7 years or 15,000 km's. (The costs to identify individual communities and beneficiaries, transportation, distribution, training and each Community Handover Ceremony are included.) Only $150 to put a hippo roller into the hands of an appreciative woman. Our immediate goal is to get 1000 hippos rolling. (That's a lot of smiling faces!)
Crowdfunding Goal 100 hippos $15,000
> Stretch Goal 1 250 hippos $37,500
> Stretch Goal 2 500 hippos $75,000
> Stretch Goal 3 1000 hippos $150,000
In the event we are even more successful than we'd hoped, additional funds will be used to expand the project (Let's Roll 5,000 Hippos) and increase the number of hippo rollers delivered.
