The plan is to take a group of musically dedicated kids to Santiago de Cuba to participate in five days of workshops in Cuban 'Son', one of the most influential and widespread forms of Latin American music, music, and immerse in a unique musical culture.
School of Groove is a music program dedicated to creating unique and inspiring experiences for kids and youths. Based in Vancouver, School of Groove works with local world musicians to create a unique program that introduces kids to the music of Cuba, Brazil and parts of Africa. Our goal is to instill confidence, promote positive performance experiences and have fun!
We have a talented and focused group of kids who are interested in taking what they have learned to another level. We hope to inspire them further by taking them to the source of the music that they have come to love. For some of the students, this will be a returning trip to further develop their skills and renew the friendships they began in January 2016 during our first journey.
The plan is to travel to Santiago de Cuba to participate in five days of workshops in Cuban Son (one of the most influential and widespread forms of Latin American music) and immerse in a unique musical culture. The southeastern part of the island is the birthplace and important centre of not only Son but many other traditional sounds including changui and the conga of Carnaval. The workshops will include instruction on guitar, bass, Cuban tres, conga, bongos and other percussion. We will study with local musicians who are experts in this style and can give us an authentic representation.
These kids come from families who are passionate about giving their children important life-changing experiences and encourage them to follow their passions. Taking them to the source of an important musical movement will give them the opportunity to learn about another culture, hone their skills, challenge their way of thinking and make them more interested, engaged, passionate and worldly individuals.
Our aim is to help these kids achieve their goal by participating in a cultural exchange. Knowing Cuba’s present situation and how difficult it is for Cuban kids to acquire many things that we take for granted, the School of Groove musicians plan to bring supplies to help support Cuban schools and music programs.
Without your help, our goals may not be met, and not all of these kids will be able to participate in this rare opportunity. Our goal is to fundraise close to $12,500 to cover most of the cost to get ten students and instructor down to this vibrant eastern part of the island. We have already raised and collected just about $1300. We need help with the rest!
Projected fundraising goal details to cover a portion of the expenses:
Local Transportation: $600
Already collected: $1,300
We need only $11,200 to reach our goal!
Thank-you for your generosity!
