"Words of Wisdom" is an album of original music by musician/journalist John Malkin,
integrating his interviews with Thich Nhat Hanh, Noam Chomsky, Joanna Macy, Howard
Zinn, Daniel Ellsberg and many other activists, artists and spiritual leaders, all originally
broadcast on Free Radio Santa Cruz, a commercial-free, collectively-run, unlicensed radio
station in California celebrating it's 20th birthday in 2015. ("Words of Wisdom" will benefit
FRSC and Food Not Bombs)
"WORDS OF WISDOM" is an album of dynamic music from John Malkin, infused with the voices of some of the world’s most inspiring social change activists, spiritual teachers, writers, artists, musicians and philosophers. This full-length CD will be a diverse set of songs that support the words, ideas and feelings of some of the 500 people John has interviewed on his weekly radio show - The Great Leap Forward – over the past seventeen years, including some of the following:

Proceeds from the sales of the “Words of Wisdom” album will benefit Free Radio Santa Cruz (freakradio.org) and Food Not Bombs (foodnotbombs.net). The first feeds minds and the second feeds bellies. Free Radio Santa Cruz is an independent, commercial-free station that will be twenty years old in 2015. Food Not Bombs was founded in 1980 and now has chapters all over the world, offering free food to hungry people. “Words of Wisdom” will be made available as a free download for all independent radio stations worldwide.
"WORDS OF WISDOM" - THE MUSIC
John Malkin has performed piano and percussion often with dancers and in collaboration with other musicians, poets, artists and activists. John has produced two CD's of original music: "Live At The Vault" and "Fifteen Solo Piano Songs." In recent years he performed with West African Kora Master Foday Musa Suso and was the opening performer for Germany’s Hauschka. He regularly plays concerts in collaboration with ensembles as well as solo piano concerts in Santa Cruz, California and a recent 2014 concert in Mallorca, Spain. John has also produced music for other musicians and has created soundtracks for film and video.
John’s main instruments are piano and percussion, including the mystical, magical metal Halo (Hang) drum. A variety of musicians will be invited to participate in “Words of Wisdom” to add vocals and instruments like guitar, cello, saxophone, trumpet, flute and tabla, bringing influences from Blues, Classical, Jazz, African, Asian and Indian influences. “Words of Wisdom” will be a blend of meditative, introspective music along with rhythmically invigorating pieces.

John Malkin’s interviews and writings have been published widely including in The Sun, Ascent, Tricycle, Shambhala Sun, Spirituality & Health, Z Magazine, In These Times, Sojourners, Alternet, Punk Planet and other periodicals. He is also author of two books: “Sounds of Freedom: Musicians on Spirituality and Social Change” (2005-Parallax Press; with an introduction by Thich Nhat Hanh) and “The Only Alternative: Christian Nonviolent Peacemakers in America” (2007-Wipf & Stock). John has also edited books and had numerous interviews included in compilations and his writings have been translated into Italian and Japanese.
